From the study of Shekizhar’s “Peria Puranam”, we come to understand that ‘THIRUMOOLAR’ is one among the “63 SAIVA SAINTS” . He is also considered one among the famous “18 SIDHARS”.
There lived a great Sidhar called ‘ Sundarar ‘ in Himalayas. Once while flying In the air, (using sidhi power) to meet ‘SAGE AGASTHYAR’, down SOUTH INDIA, near THIRUVAVADUTHURAI, he sees from above, a herd of cattle gathered around their cowherd and crying. Sundarar comes down and notices that the cowherd “Moola” is dead and the cattle are crying, missing him. He takes pity on the cows & hides his body & through yogic power, enters the body of ‘Moola’ . The cattle are happy seeing their master come back to life. He leads them back home.
The people around notice a change in ‘Moola’s behaviour & he also leaves them & sits under a banyan tree and enters into deep meditation. Now and then, when he came out of meditation, he rendered a mantra, which formed the 3000 mantras of THIRUMANDIRAM
